The more I re-read her statement, the more questions I have. Bedridden for 2 years because of her benefits?!? What?!? Come on. Laying in bed was her choice. Miraculously she’s been fine for the past 6 months? I’m sorry, if you’re bedridden for 2 years, you’re not going to be able to function normally as soon as your benefits kick in. There is a long road of recovery for someone who is truly bedridden. Who was taking care of her? It makes no sense. And if she was injured so badly due to her landlords negligence, where’s the check?? Not falling for this one

Also, there are laws in the state of Florida that protect renters when the landlord refuses to fix things like the ones she’s describing. Something is fishy.

My question is why couldn’t she go back to Connecticut after the divorce. She claims it was secure and stable. There is more to that story that she left out. And what happened at the apartment in Hastings that she had to escape to live in a delapatated storage trailer? She has a pattern of making questionable decisions.

With that being said, I’m not opposed to purchasing additional items he needs. We do not give cash to someone looking to pay their bills. We pay the bill directly. We can discover what he needs most, and provide it.

I say help him with the pump. Absolutely. I’m against the $500 gift card. It can be sold, or used for booze, etc. just my honest thoughts again.

Not I. Whoever advocates needs to specifically ask what efforts she has made (other than making excuses) to better herself. I dont think she meets the criteria for further engagement. Simply tell her we cannot help her at this time and use our funds wisely.

Yeah. I always feel horrible having an opinion about someone else’s life. In a lot of our requests for help, Im able to understand that my interpretation of someone’s situation is based on limited information. Therefore, I ask questions. Thats why we have this forum. This time, I feel like the applicant showed herself clearly by placing the blame on her ex, then on the officer for her possession charge. Seems she has trouble taking responsibility for the problems in her life. I really do try to be as empathetic as possible because I personally know how hard it is to ask for help. Here we have a situation where 1) is it dire need? She’s been living in her current residence for a while now, she’s not being evicted that we know of. She just wants something nicer. Don’t we all? And 2) our rules clearly state she is ineligible for assistance due to her criminal past. I know we are able to make exceptions, and we have. But those recipients proved to be helping themselves in anyway they could, not blaming others for their situation. I hope someone will participate in this discussion so I don’t feel like the ass. Or tell me I’m wrong. Or something.. :) I’m here for it

This has been over the span of 10 years. She made no mention as to what she has done in all that time to improve her living situation.

“Through no fault of their own” Is a major part of our acceptance criteria. In her first statement, she automatically blamed some one else for her situation that she’s remained in for some time, as she describes. Sorry, I’m not feeling this one.

Hello Krewe. I hate sounding brash about requests from our applicants. Her situation certainly sounds desperate, but I have questions. 1) Shes asking for the application fee. Has she been approved for the $1800/mo apartment? Shouldnt we wait until we know if the particular place she’s picked out is confirmed? 2) is internet a dire need?

Thank you Mary! I’m so sorry I’m only seeing your post now. I think the Flagler Beach parade is a lot of fun. Our Krewe used to participate annually until Covid. Maybe it’s something we can get back into. Anyone else interested?

After speaking with Hailey, I was able to gain a few more details about her situation. She moved from Washington 18 months ago into a friend’s living room with her child after being shot at several times by her ex. Her escape was sudden and left with nothing. Over the past 18 months, Hailey has been working and able to secure a home for her and her child in Palm Coast. She has been involved with the Family Life Center and has been participating in Victim counseling sevices there. The abuser has not been to Florida. He is still in Washington. However, he has sent Flowers to her workplace and called there numerous times. She does not have a protection order in place. When she asked her DV advocate about obtaining one, it was explained to her that she would have to first tell him to leave her alone, and if he continued to harass her, then a protection order may be filed. Then he would have to be served, and she is afraid he would then find out what county she lives in. Since leaving her job on January 9th, she has had no problems with him. She is starting a remote position on 2/24. She will be working from home which makes her feel safe. Eviction proceedings have not been started yet. I hope these details help to determine if she meets criteria for eligibility. Does anyone have anything they would like me to clarify before this goes to a vote?
